The Norwegian Pilot Guide – Sailing Directions
The Norwegian pilot guide "Den norske los", consists of sailing directions for the Norwegian coast, Svalbard and Jan Mayen, and is a supplement to the nautical charts.
The Norwegian pilot guide "Den norske los", is produced and maintained by the Norwegian Mapping Authority's Hydrographic Service.
There is content from the pdf editions of the nautical publication that has not yet been georeferenced. We are working on this on an ongoing basis. Translation of content into English is not complete.
New version Den norske los 2.0
In june 2024, the Norwegian Mapping Authority launched version 2.0 of the Norwegian pilotguide "Den norske los". The Norwegian pilot is available in Norwegian and English versions.
"Den norske los" 2.0 includes a new basemap, available in several scales and zoom levels that provides more detailed map information. The map works according to the principles of official electronic nautical charts (ENC), but looks like a paper chart.
When using the Norwegian Coastal Administration's reference routes in the web service, you can create a report with content from "Den norske los". You can download or save the report as a favorite.
Important source of information
"Den norske los" contains sailing directions for the various fairways and channels. It provides information on harbours, anchorage and routes. "Den norske los" is available in Norwegian and English versions.
You can use reference routes from the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) to get a report with notices along the route.
There are also aerial photos, sketches and panoramic views, in addition to information on wind and tidal currents. Other information includes ship and boat yards, marinas, bunkers, local businesses, quay lengths and depths etc.
Volume 1 "General information" of the book series "Norwegian sailing directions – Den norske los", will no longer be updated in its current form (pdf). The book is not part of the digital edition of the online service dnl.kartverket.no. You will find general information in the handbook connected to the Norwegian notices to mariners "Etterretinger for sjøfarende" (Efs), an online service.
Mandatory publication
Vessels subject to registration are required to have the Norwegian pilot guide "Den norske los" on board the vessel. However, smaller vessels will also benefit greatly from the pilot guide, as it is adapted to meet the specific needs for information of the leisure fleet.
Nautical Charts
The official charts from the Norwegian Mapping Authority, Hydrographic Service are updated more frequently than the pilot guides. In the case of inconsistencies between the chart and the Norwegian pilot guide, the information in the chart should take precedence.
